How to Open a WebP File on Windows and Mac
Why Can’t I Open This WebP File?
If you downloaded a WebP image from the internet and can’t open it, you’re not alone. While modern browsers display WebP images natively, some desktop applications — particularly older versions — don’t support the format yet.
Here’s how to open WebP files on every major platform.
Opening WebP on Windows 10 and Windows 11
Method 1: Use a Web Browser (Easiest)
Every modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox — opens WebP images natively.
- Right-click the WebP file
- Select Open with → Google Chrome (or Microsoft Edge)
- The image opens instantly in your browser
Method 2: Windows Photos App
Windows 10 (version 1809 and later) and Windows 11 can open WebP files with the built-in Photos app.
- Right-click the WebP file → Open with → Photos
- If it doesn’t work, install the free WebP Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store
- After installing, Photos (and other Windows apps) will open WebP files
Method 3: Paint / Paint 3D
On Windows 11, Paint supports WebP. On Windows 10, you may need the WebP Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store first.
Opening WebP on macOS
Method 1: Preview (macOS Ventura and Later)
macOS Ventura (13.0, released 2022) and later versions support WebP natively in Preview.
- Double-click the WebP file — it should open in Preview automatically
- From Preview, you can export to JPEG or PNG via File → Export
Method 2: Safari
Safari on macOS has supported WebP since Safari 14 (2020).
- Right-click the file → Open With → Safari
- The image displays in the browser window
Method 3: Use Quick Look
Press Space while the WebP file is selected in Finder. Quick Look will display it on macOS Monterey and later.
Opening WebP in Photoshop
Photoshop (2023 and later) supports WebP natively. If you have an older version:
- Check for updates in Help → Updates
- Or install the free WebPShop plugin from Google
Convert WebP to PNG or JPEG (No Software Needed)
If you just need the image in a format that works with your software, the easiest solution is to convert it:
- Go to Imgora — WebP to PNG converter
- Drop your WebP file into the converter
- Click Convert Images
- Download the PNG or JPEG — done
The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. It’s free and instant.
Opening WebP on Mobile
iPhone / iPad: Photos app on iOS 14 and later opens WebP natively.
Android: Google Photos and the default Gallery app on Android support WebP. You can also open WebP files directly in Chrome.
